A new statistical method to assess potential debris flow erosion

Debris-flow erosion patterns were investigated for two adjacent catchments, Molinara and Val del Lago creeks (Eastern Alps, Trento Province, Italy), where debris flows triggered by an intense storm in the summer of 2010. Both basins have been inactive over last centuries. The activated channel bank under stable bed conditions before event. erosive process was analysed combining a field campaign (two hundred cross sections surveyed along creeks) pre- post-event LiDAR surveys. Data selecting morphologically-homogenous reaches deriving each reach: depth, creek width, eroded volume peak discharge. Investigating frequency distribution depth we found out that it follows EV1 probability distribution. On this basis, new approach has proposed to predict event volumes when expected maximum potential is known. procedure would be high interest predicting flow mountain channels characterized long silent periods.
